Have you ever asked yourself why German Shepherds are used as police dogs? Well if you have, here's the answer! They are valued for their strength and intelligence. They are very fierce animals. They become very protective of their owner and keep them out of harms way. Many German Shepherds spend a lot of time with the police force and the police force becomes very fond of the dog. Many police officers mourn the lost of their K-9 as they would for a friend or family member. In New Jersey there is a law called, "Solo's Law", stating that is illegal to shoot and kill a K-9. This law was made and named after a dog, Solo, who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Some make think it's silly to have a dog as a police officer, but with these animals are one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs. They sniff out drugs, chase down criminals, and warn the police force of potential danger. THAT is why German Shepherds are used as working police dogs.
